Part 4 of 7 of the theme 'Lessons from Song of Songs' by Gijs van den Brink
The consummation of marriage is very poetically described in 4:16- 5:1. It is the heart of the Song of Songs and undoubtedly describes the sexual relationship. The bride says "Awake, north wind! Come, south wind! Blow through my court, let his balms smell. My love must come into his court, let him taste his sweet fruits there". And then the bridegroom replies "Here I am in my garden, sister, bride of mine. I pluck my myrrh and my balm, I eat my honey from my honeycomb, I drink my milk and my wine". And then the girls say, "Eat, friend and friend! Drink, and get drunk with love!"
After living for a while in the capital Jerusalem in the king's palace, the bride longs to return to her birthplace. She tries to convince Solomon to go back with her (7:12-13). And succeeding, they go back and there the fifth meeting takes place (8:5-7). Their relationship deepens again. Their love is not disturbed by anything, including jealousy and circumstances.
The girl from Sunem is in reality a daughter from an ordinary peasant family in the northern province of Galilee. A woman of simple thoughts who loves village and rural life. Solomon is in love with a woman far below his station as king. He elevates the girl to the status of queen and he himself becomes beside this queen like a child. The simple girl teaches the king simplicity. The shepherd girl brings the king to her level, to her sphere of life. The simple girl brings the king who lives in opulence with many women to pure and pure love.
