According to Christians, what is God's purpose for marriage (part 2)

Last time you said that God created man and woman to 1. work together, 2. serve God together and 3. have children together.
Are there other characteristics of a Christian marriage?

Certainly, we can add two more important features.

In the first place, a marriage is a relationship of love and loyalty. The world around us usually only talks about love. The Bible talks about love and faithfulness. In Spr.3:3 it says May love and fidelity never leave you, wind them around your neck, write them in your heart.

Love and faithfulness are inseparable from God and are the cement of relationship. God is loving and faithful to his bride, the church. Likewise, he expects us to be faithful to our husband or wife.

But a Christian marriage is more!!!

A marriage of Christians is a testimony of God's love.
We read that in Ephesians 5:32  The mystery [of marriage] is great, but I speak with an eye to Christ and to the church.

If you continually expect it from God in your life, your marriage will be a testimony to the love of Jesus Christ. And then many others will also be blessed by this.

A marriage of Christians is characterized by: 1. Love and faithfulness and 2. Witnessing the love of Jesus Christ.
These characteristics are not naturally present in us. On the contrary, natural feelings are usually selfish.
Faithfulness and true love the Holy Spirit works in us.
From how we treat our wife or husband, others can see that we are serving Jesus.

Father and mother are both priests and pastors in their families.
The family is as spiritual a thing as the church.
Every marriage and family that does not realize that it is smallest form of the church is missing its purpose.
Marriage and family are meant to be a place to serve God.

Gewapend in de strijd
28 April 2026
