End Time

What does the future of the world look like? Part 2

July 2, 2025 - drs. G. (Gijs) van den Brink

What does the future of the world look like? Jesus answers this question in Matthew 24. After visiting the temple, Jesus tells them that it will be torn down. Then the disciples ask him when that will happen and what is the sign of his coming and the end of the world (vs.1-3).

It is interesting to note that the disciples assume that the demolition of the temple will coincide with the return of Jesus and the end of the present world order.

Surely, according to Jesus, this is slightly different, and he goes on to explain in detail what the future of the world looks like. He foresees a future consisting of three eras or periods: today we deal with the second era:

The time of the antichrist (read verse 15-28)

Jesus calls the last years before his return a time of need such as there has never been nor will it ever come again (vs. 21). This is worldwide (Rev. 3:10), and particularly directed at tribulation of believers (Mat. 24:24; Rev. 13:7).

This period begins with the manifestation of the antichrist described as a "destructive abomination" (vs. 15). What it is specifically about, Jesus does not say. But many interpreters believe that the antichrist will place an image of himself in the "holy place" (today's temple square) in Jerusalem.

The time that then begins is characterized by the abominable reign of the antichrist, a world dictator (Rev. 13), who receives his strength and power from Satan (Rev. 13:4-5).

Furthermore, during this time there will be a great extensive activity of demons take place, as we can read in Revelation 9 (vs.2,11,20).

Our attitude?

What should our attitude as Christians be when we live in these times? What advice does Jesus give his disciples? Should we as Christians or as a church fight the antichrist in a war? Jesus is very clear about this: "then everyone in Judea must flee into the mountains" (vs.16, 20). Jesus speaks plainly: do not wage war, but flee to safe places.

Contemplation question:

Gewapend in de strijd
28 April 2026
