God gives even a murderer a second chance

October 19, 2022 - drs. G. (Gijs) van den Brink
Part 4 of 7 of the theme 'Lessons on the character of God by Gijs van den Brink

Last time we saw that Cain is angry with God, but in turn God does not reject Cain. He continues to have a conversation with him. God's intention was for Cain to come to self-understanding and repentance, but does this happen? We read in Gen. 4:8,

"Cain said to his brother Abel, 'Let's go into the field.' When they were there, he attacked his brother and beat him to death.

Cain does not repent. He doesn't even bother to give God an answer. But he then does speak to his brother Abel. He invites Abel to go with him into the field and kills him right there!!! Sin has taken control of Cain even more and so he has fallen into a sliding scale. Not putting God first, being angry with God, being jealous and angry with his brother and then committing murder.

Surely now it is perfectly clear, you would think. What is in it has come out; we are dealing here with a sinful evil man, a murderer. There is only one answer to that among us: condemnation and punishment. Yet miraculously, that is not God's response. Cain is given a second chance by Him. [to be continued]

Twee vormen van discipelschap in de Evangeliën
2 March 2026

Is it possible for a Christian to lose his preservation?
26 January 2026
