January 23, 2025 - Maaike van der Graaf

That the Netherlands is rooted in Christianity is especially strongly reflected in the holidays we celebrate and the days off from work, school or study. We celebrate several Christian holidays that play an important role in our culture.

These are those holidays and their significance:

1. Christmas

Christmas, celebrated on Dec. 25 and 26, commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ. It is a time of gathering with family and friends, decorating homes and giving gifts. For many people, it is also a time of reflection and joy, with church services and Christmas carols celebrating the birth of Jesus as the Savior. For Christians, it is also often a time to focus extra on others, by doing something good for people who are struggling. To be - symbolically - a light during the dark days, just as the birth of Jesus Christ also brought light to the world.

2. Good Friday

Good Friday, the Friday before Easter, is a day of mourning and reflection. We commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus and his suffering for humanity. Many Christians hold silent services on this day and reflect on the meaning of sacrifice and atonement. It is a time to reflect on the seriousness of Jesus' death and the path to redemption.

3. Easter

Easter, which usually falls in March or April, is one of the most important holidays in Christianity. We celebrate the resurrection of Jesus from the dead, an event central to the faith. The days before, such as Good Friday and Palm Sunday, include important moments in Jesus' final days. Leading up to Easter, many Christians fast. For example, by not eating meat until Easter. For many, Easter is also a time of new hope and renewal...,

4. Ascension

Ascension, celebrated forty days after Easter, commemorates the event in which Jesus ascended into heaven. This feast marks the conclusion of the earthly period of Jesus' life and the promise of his return. For Christians, it is a time to reflect on the meaning of Jesus' life and the hope his resurrection offers.

5. Pentecost

On Pentecost, fifty days after Easter, we celebrate the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the disciples. The Holy Spirit comes as a substitute for Jesus. . It is a celebration of union and inspiration, where Christians believe the Holy Spirit gives them power to spread the message about Jesus in the world.

6. Advent

Advent is a four-week period leading up to Christmas. It is a time of preparation and anticipation, when many people prepare their hearts and homes for the coming of Jesus. Advent wreaths and calendars are popular ways to celebrate this period.
