Part 7 of 8 of the theme 'Lessons from the Book of Ruth‘ by Gijs van den Brink
The lineage in the final verses (4:18-20) indicates that Naomi's joy and blessing is extended to a blessing for the whole people. The son Ruth received is a link in the lineage of David, from which the Messiah is eventually born (Mat. 1:5; Luke 3:32). So Ruth and Boaz are both in the genealogy of Jesus. So we see in the ancestry of Jesus two lines, a Jewish one, Boaz, and a gentile one, Ruth.
It is an indication that Jesus came to bring salvation to Jews and Gentiles!
The book of Ruth is read by the Jews on the Jewish Feast of Weeks, 50 days after the Passover. It is a harvest feast for them. This feast coincides with our Pentecost. Thus Ruth becomes a type of the many believers from all nations invited to belong to the people of God since Pentecost. And Boaz, as "looser," is a type of Jesus Christ. Ruth seeks "rest," seeks a home with Boaz, her looser (3:1). So we as believers from the Gentiles find rest and a home with Jesus, the Redeemer of all people. He brings true rest (Heb. 4).
