Part 6 of 7 of the theme 'Lessons from Song of Songs' by Gijs van den Brink
There are repeated times in the Song of Songs the call not to stir up love until it pleases (2:7; 3:5; 8:4). It is important to wait for the right time. This characterizes Song of Songs as wisdom literature. The Song of Songs teaches a lesson to unmarried young girls in Jerusalem and Israel. These girls are of the age to marry; they are physically and sexually marriageable. They are advised to wait with sexual intimacy. Their bodies say "yes" and their desire for intimacy says "yes." But the girls are advised to say "no."
The book of Song of Songs advises unmarried girls to wait to have sex. The message is: girls, remain virgins! ... Not forever, but for the time being. Wait with sex until marriage. That is the simple wisdom of this complex book.
Song of Songs emphasizes in a very powerful and personal way the importance and power of a pure love relationship.
Then there is a second recurring piece of advice. "My beloved is mine and I am his ..." (2:16; cf. 6:3 and 7:11). In the Song of Songs, the bridegroom finds the unique bride, the one bride destined for him.
These two recurring refrains function as a key with which to open the door of the book and the door of a good marriage.
