So Master so Apprentice

Part 4 of 10 of the theme 'The Holy Spirit in the NT ' by Gijs van den Brink

In the previous blogs, we have seen that at key moments in Jesus' life and ministry, the Holy Spirit plays a leading role. At his birth, his baptism, his ministry on earth and at Pentecost after his ascension.

We also see that Jesus taught his disciples that these main moments will also have a place in their lives. There is an analogy between the master and his disciples.

A few examples. Jesus made it clear in his conversation with Nicodemus that his followers also born of the Spirit must become. This rebirth is indispensable. Indeed, he says "Truly, I assure you: only those who are born again can see the kingdom of God. (John 3:3) and: 'What is born of a man is human, and what is born of the Spirit is spiritual. (John 3:6).

Furthermore, Jesus taught that his followers must also be baptized and that for them too the promise of the filling with the Spirit will be fulfilled.
And after his resurrection, he made it clear to them that even their ministry and witness could not be done without the power of the Holy Spirit. That's why they had to wait in Jerusalem.

We also see in the New Testament epistles that the apostles teach this agreement between master and disciple. Paul says in Rom. 6:4-5 'We are buried with him through baptism into his death ... If we share in his death, we will also share in his resurrection.

And in Ephesians 6:2, Paul also includes the ascension in this analogy. 'He raised us from the dead with him and gave us a place in the heavenly spheres, in Christ Jesus.

Next time, we will look a little deeper into the significance of the Spirit's outpouring at Pentecost in the faith journey of individual believers.

Gewapend in de strijd
28 April 2026
