Part 7 of 7 of the theme 'Lessons from Song of Songs' by Gijs van den Brink
So far we have talked about the natural historical meaning of the song called Song of Songs. But there is also a spiritual application. The prophets call the people of God the bride of God (Isa. 62:5; Jer. 2:2). And Paul says in Eph.5:32 that marriage is a mystery, a mystery. He says, "This mystery is great - and I relate it to Christ and the church."
Marriage is a depiction of the loving relationship between Jesus Christ and the church. And the book of Revelation describes that a wedding supper will be held at Jesus' return (Rev. 19:6-9).
From the message of the Bible as a whole, the Song of Songs can be seen as a likeness be read. Beware, a parable is not an allegory in which every detail has a spiritual meaning. Not only is that impossible, but it is just plain wrong. Because there is no allegory in the Bible. The Bible has only typology and similarities.
And so King Solomon is a type, a shadow image of Jesus Christ. And the shepherd girl is a type of the congregation, the church.
A parable is an event from everyday life with spiritual significance. Thus, from the desire of bride to bridegroom, we can learn something about the desire of believers for Jesus Christ.
We learn something in the Song of Songs about the love affair between believers and Jesus Christ. In our relationship with Jesus, too, we feel the pain when distance has come. Our love relationship with Jesus is also about waiting, seeking and finding.
We too look forward to the coming of the bridegroom who comes to take us so that we may always be with Him.
