Global crisis in Revelation 8

We are currently experiencing an unprecedented global infection crisis with Covid-19. This is an unprecedented event in all of our lives, though not in human history. And then you look in the Bible for clues as to how we should place these things. There are several answers to give, but I want to limit myself here to the vision John receives on Patmos, which he wrote down in Revelation 8.

In Revelation 5, we read about the scroll with the seven seals that contains God's plan for the future. Only Jesus could open this scroll. In the next chapter (Rev. 6), the first six seals are opened. The contents of the seals correspond to Matthew 24 and describe the time between Pentecost and end times. We hear about features such as worldwide gospel proclamation, wars, famine and persecution. In chapter 7, the end-time judgments are held back until believers are sealed. John sees who will be saved, namely a fullness from Israel and a great multitude from the other nations.

Then we come to chapter 8, where we read that the Lamb breaks the seventh and last seal (vs.1). The first four of seven angels blow a trumpet to announce judgment, and John sees a number of ecological disasters strike the earth.

John sees that nature is overwhelmingly turning against humanity. But before that, John sees something else happening.

Next time: Silence in heaven before the crisis erupts.

The sin of Cain and the character of God
13 May 2026

28 April 2026
