Part 1 of 8 of the theme 'Lessons from the Book of Ruth‘ by Gijs van den Brink
The content of the book of Ruth is in sharp contrast to the dark and dark richter times. It is a story of love, devotion and redemption. Ruth is a Moabite woman who leaves her own people and culture to join the people and God of Israel. Ruth shows faith and faithfulness during a time of complete faithlessness and wickedness in Israel. Therefore, God rewards her with a new husband (Boaz) and a son (Obed) and a privileged position. She becomes the great-grandmother of King David.
We read in Ruth 1:1 "In the time of the judges, a famine broke out in the land. A man left Bethlehem, in Judah, to settle with his wife and his two sons as a stranger in the plains of Moab. The book of Ruth is set in the time of the Judges (1400-1000 B.C.). This is a time of apostasy, war, violence, moral decay, idolatry and anarchy. During a famine, Elimelech leaves with his wife Naomi and their two sons for Moab. Moab was a land northeast of the Dead Sea, where the god Kemos and other idols of rain and fertility were worshiped. In this regard, you could say that with this flight they went from the rain into the drizzle.
