Bible texts about suffering

November 21, 2024 - Maaike van der Graaf

Suffering is an inevitable part of human life, and for many people, suffering raises questions: why does it happen? What is its purpose? Fortunately, Christians see suffering not only as a setback, but also as an opportunity for growth, connection and deepening of their faith.

The Bible teaches that suffering can shape us and bring us closer to God. It provides an opportunity to experience how God comforts us and leads us through difficult times. In this blog, we share Bible verses that can encourage and inspire us when it comes to suffering.

Romans 5:3-5

"(...) We even allow ourselves to get ahead of the misery we experience, because we know that misery leads to perseverance, perseverance to trustworthiness, and trustworthiness to hope. This hope will not be shamed, because God's love has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us."

1 Peter 5:10

"But though you must suffer for a short time yet, God, the source of all grace, who called you to partake of His eternal glory in Christ, He will make you strong and powerful, so that you will stand firm and not falter."

Hebrews 4:15-16

"For this high priest (Jesus, ed.) can sympathize with our weaknesses because He, like us, has been tested in every way, but without sinning. So let us approach without hesitation the throne of God's grace, where we find mercy and grace every time we need help."

Psalm 73:26

"Though my heart succumbs and my body perishes, the rock of my existence, all I have is God, now and always."

John 16:33

"I have said this so that you may find peace with Me. You will have a hard time in the world, but keep courage: I have overcome the world."
