This commentary includes a discussion of the stratification of the Psalms. Thus discussed are:
1. The historical situation of the poet
2. The sometimes general wording
3. Inclusion in the Psalter to be sung in the temple and elsewhere
4. Editorial placement decisions.
5. The relationship to the New Testament and the Christian church

Because of the distinctive nature of the psalms, we have chosen to divide the explanations for each psalm into separate sections, such as Explanation, Message, Place in the Psalter and (if applicable) New Testament.
