Part 1 of 12 of the theme 'Lessons from Revelation ' by Gijs van den Brink
We in the West in the 21st century are not very familiar with visions. Our Western culture has been on a path since the enlightenment in which visions and revelations are not taken as a reliable source of information. Incidentally, the influx of migrants from Asia and Africa is forcing us to think about this. Just recently, the IND (the Immigration and Naturalization Service) published a new work instruction, which addresses the testing of dreams and visions through which many Muslims have been converted.
The apostle John received many visions and they are often very visual and cryptic. For example Rev. 5:6 'Then in the midst of the throne and surrounded by the four creatures and the elders I saw a lamb standing. It looked as if it had been slaughtered and It had seven horns and seven eyes ...' . John sees the lamb "as if it had been slaughtered. But the wonderful thing is that he also sees the lamb 'standing'! That's not possible at all, a slaughtered lamb lies. And it is a lamb with seven horns and seven eyes. Strange imagery.
The visions in Revelation are the reason that the content, style and even language in this book are different from those in the gospels and epistles. It is interesting to read how John himself describes his spiritual experiences.
We will say something about that next time.
