After Jesus asked John to accept Mary as his mother and take care of her, everything that needed to be done was done. The moment he will die has come very close.
In His final suffering, Jesus has an agonizing thirst. Therefore He cries out 'I'm thirsty. This was already announced by King David in Psalm 22, the psalm that Jesus also quoted moments before when he said "my God, my God, why have you forsaken me. Everything written about Him in the OT is fulfilled.
Jesus' thirst also has a message for us. Jesus used water as an image of the life God wants to give to us humans. "Whoever drinks of the water I give," Jesus says, will never thirst again. On the cross, Jesus suffers intense thirst in order to make us a fountain of living water. Jesus wants to empty the cup of suffering to the last drop. Therefore, He who gives the living water must Himself suffer thirst.
One more moment He has to suffer and then it will be over. Then He will go to heaven and after 50 days on the Feast of Pentecost pouring out the living water of His Spirit on His disciples.
