Part 7 of 12 of the theme 'Lessons from Revelation ' by Gijs van den Brink
Rev. 18 is about the Babylon culture of the end times. Religion, politics and economics unite and whore with Babylon.
In verse 3 we read, "All nations have drunk the wine of her lust through her fornication, the kings of the earth have fornicated with her, and the merchants of the earth have become rich from her abundant opulence.
It is a culture where religion and politics are secondary to trade and economics!!! Actually, the heart of the Babylon culture is an all-controlling and exploitative economy. And that contains an important message for our time. Even in our time, economics and money is usually the deciding factor in making decisions. Not only in government, but in churches as well.
And we also see these standards working on a global level. Our Western world, through its technological development, no longer needs the people of the Third World, only its seas, resources and forests. The commandment of charity has been replaced by another norm, the norm of Mammon, the god of money. Jesus already spoke about this: 'No one can serve two masters, for he will either hate the one and love the other, or be attached to the one and despise the other; you cannot serve God and Mammon'(Mat. 6:24)
It is important to take note of what attitude we are called to in Rev. 18:4: "Depart from her, my people, so as not to partake of her sins'.
Of course, we cannot leave the world, but we belong to the Kingdom of God and not to this world system. And that is why we must keep away from the sinful practices of this world.
