Part 5 of 8 of the theme 'Lessons from the Book of Ruth‘ by Gijs van den Brink
For the Jewish rabbis, Boaz is the model Israelite and Ruth is the perfect proselyte. Ruth is an example of a courageous woman full of faith and love (3:11) who is far above the average of her time in lifestyle. In contrast to the rebellion and wickedness of the people of Israel at this time, the pagan Ruth is an example of integrity and righteousness. Ruth is an example in loyalty and love to her mother-in-law Naomi, as well as to her looser Boaz. In both relationships, goodness and love are paramount.
Boaz, too, is a model character. When Ruth comes to read ears in Boaz's field, he voluntarily does much more than the law requires (2:8-10, 14-16, 21). This also makes him an example. The key word in the actions of Ruth and Boaz is the Hebrew word chesed. It has a broad meaning and is sometimes translated "kind, good, loving, merciful, faithful, loyal. Chesed is a word that characterizes the character of God. When God appears to Moses He says of Himself that He is abundant in chesed, in goodness and love and faithfulness (Ex. 34:6-7). In the ten commandments, God says that He is His chesed, demonstrates His goodness to those who love and obey Him (Ex. 20:6; Deut. 5:10). Ruth's character and works are full of the chesed of God, of goodness, love and faithfulness. Boaz and Ruth are examples of believers who have the law in their hearts. They are filled with love and faithfulness that far surpasses all duty.
