Job as a type of Jesus Christ

January 6, 2021 - drs. G. (Gijs) van den Brink
Part 7 of 7 of the theme 'Lessons from the Bible book of Job' by Gijs van den Brink

Not only in the wisdom of the book of Job do we meet Jesus Christ, but also in the person of Job himself. We see in the person of Job a shadow or type of Christ. In this typology, however, we must immediately note that there is also an important difference. While Job's suffering was innocent, it had no atoning significance. The life of Job as well as, for example, the life of Joseph points forward to Jesus.

  • Job speaks several times about his being forsaken by God.
  • Like Jesus, Job suffers as an innocent.
  • Like Jesus, Job prays for his hostile friends (42:8).
  • After his humiliation, Job, like Jesus, is exalted by God.

Both the person of Job and the central role of the wisdom of God point forward to the coming of the Messiah Jesus to earth.

Job was restored to full health in the end, and he received back all his possessions twice over (42:10). So will it happen to any of us who have the faith trust of Job. No matter what you lose in your life, no matter how disastrous your life turns out, whoever puts his trust in Jesus Christ will receive everything back, and not twofold, but a hundredfold!

For Jesus said:
"I assure you: everyone who has left brothers or sisters, mother, father or children, house or fields for my sake and the gospel, will receive a hundredfold: in this time brothers and sisters, mothers and children, houses and fields, even though it will be accompanied by persecution, and in the time to come eternal life." (Mar.10:29-30)

Next time: we start a series of lessons from Ecclesiastes, blog 1 is titled Does life make sense?

Gewapend in de strijd
28 April 2026
