Part 4 of 7 of the theme 'Lessons from the Bible book of Job' by Gijs van den Brink
In Job 28, the author of the book of Job himself is speaking, which is also the case in chapters 1-2 and the closing 42:7-17. Chapter 28 is a pivotal point in the book. The wisdom of the friends consists in thinking that what happens in a human life is an effect of God's righteous retribution. In chapter 28, this changes. A different perspective comes in here. From a search for God's righteous retribution, from now on it becomes a search for God's wisdom.
Not pondering and seeking God's righteous guidance, but pondering God's wisdom, which surpasses all human reason, is the answer. To judge God's judgment and His governance, you have to know everything, you have to have all the facts. And we humans don't do that! Not at all!!!
How do you get Godly wisdom? While the friends talked mainly about God, Job seeks the conversation with God. He addresses Him directly. That is the big difference between Job and everyone else.
Human wisdom cannot fathom the cause of all kinds of events in our lives. Our knowledge is too little for this. Divine wisdom is needed. And we can taste something of that Divine wisdom when we have a relationship with God. Therefore, the encounter with God is of great significance for Job. That encounter brings him to insight (Job 42:1-6). Job receives no answer as to the cause of his suffering. Nor is his innocence confirmed. Nor does God answer the question of the relationship between sin and sickness.
All questions stop when Job is impressed by God's wisdom. When we surrender to God's wisdom and His guidance, our lives also come to rest.
Next time: what is at the heart of God's Wisdom?
