Love in the Bible 1: Eros

February 21, 2024 - Dr. Raymond Hausoul

Greek has a third word for love in addition to agapeō and phileō. That is the word eros. For
many people, "eros" sounds more familiar than the other two words. Consider the
Dutch word "eroticism. What is often called 'love' in our society is often about
eros. Eros means to love someone because you for yourself find the other person attractive or
Because that other person can offer you benefits. Therefore, the purpose of this love is focused on yourself. Your
desires the other from your own heart. Actually, this is quite I-centered. A well-known example of this
love is erotica and pornography.

In the NT, the word eros is missing. This is because God wants to give Himself to others each time.
God's love is not self-centered. Unlimited love God wants to give , even though He gets from many
people nothing in return. This is most visible on the cross of Calvary. There God gave
Himself for you and everyone else. He gave Himself away.
