Ecological disasters as judgments

August 24, 2020 - drs. G. (Gijs) van den Brink
Part 4 of 6 of the theme 'Lessons from Revelation 8' by Gijs van den Brink

In Revelation 8 beginning in verse 6, the seven angels prepare to blow their trumpets.

The first four trumpets bring ecological disasters, environmental disasters. Damage is done to trees, grass, sea, rivers, springs, sun, moon and stars. As a result, people and animals die. The blowing of the first trumpet causes a third of all vegetation on earth to burn, an environmental disaster of enormous proportions. John says he sees a rain of hail and fire mixed with blood. What should we imagine about what John saw? Some think of nuclear phenomena. Others think of a red-colored acid rain. In the Mediterranean region, rain can sometimes be mixed with red sand from the Sahara.

At the blowing of the second trumpet, a third of the sea creatures perish and a third of the ships perish (vs.8-9). John sees a burning object the size of a tall mountain falling into the sea. We can think of a meteor or comet (just as celestial bodies fall down in vs. 10 and 6:13). We can also think of extraordinarily strong volcanic eruptions. John also sees a third of the ships wrecked. The cause of this is probably the tidal waves created by the explosion, as happened with the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. Then Pompeii and other cities were completely buried with ash and lava. Then, too, this led to great mortality among marine animals and to high tidal waves that plagued shipping. A third of the marine animals died and a third of the ships perished. It must become clear to everyone that the world cannot exist on its own, but depends on its Creator.

Next time: One-third of all water poisoned.

Gewapend in de strijd
28 April 2026
